FAST Score Chart by Grade: What Each Level Means
Every Florida FAST report shows a scale score and a level from 1 to 5. The score that counts as each level is different in every grade. This page has the full chart for Reading in grades 3 to 10 and Math in grades 3 to 8, and a checker that tells you the level for any score.

Scale score ranges for each level in Mathematics. FAST Mathematics is given in grades 3 to 8. Students taking Algebra 1 or Geometry take the end-of-course exam for that course, which uses a different scale.

What each level means
The Florida Department of Education describes the five levels like this:
| Level | Name | What the state says it means |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Well Below Grade Level | Highly likely to need substantial support for the next grade. |
| Level 2 | Below Grade Level | Likely to need substantial support for the next grade. |
| Level 3 | On Grade Level | On grade level. May need additional support for the next grade. |
| Level 4 | Proficient | Likely to excel in the next grade. |
| Level 5 | Exemplary | Highly likely to excel in the next grade. |
Why the same score is a different level next year
The ranges move up with each grade, because each grade is tested on harder material. Take a Reading score of 213. In Grade 3 it is Level 4. In Grade 4 it is Level 3. In Grade 5 it is Level 2.
So a score that rises a little from one year to the next can still land in the same level, or a lower one. To compare across years, look at the level, not only the number.
Reading a fall or winter score
PM1 in the fall and PM2 in the winter use this same chart, but both tests cover the whole year of material. The Florida Department of Education says that on PM1 and PM2 a student is likely not to score at grade level, and that this does not necessarily mean the student is off track. It describes those results as informational, meant to show where a student may need more instruction and support.
For what each of the three tests is for and when they happen, see FAST PM1, PM2 and PM3 explained.
A note for Grade 3 Reading
Grade 3 Reading is the one elementary test with a state promotion rule. The state requirement for promotion to Grade 4 is Level 2 or higher on the end-of-year Grade 3 Reading test (PM3). Level 2 starts at 186. A fall or winter score does not decide this. Florida law also provides good cause exemptions, so one test score is not the only path. Ask your child's teacher early how this works at your school.
Common questions
What is a passing score on the FAST?
The state calls the lowest score in Level 3 the passing score, and Level 3 means on grade level. That score is different for every grade and subject. For example, it is 201 in Grade 3 Reading, 213 in Grade 4 Reading and 211 in Grade 4 Math. The chart on this page lists every grade.
Is the score chart the same for the fall, winter and spring tests?
Yes. PM1, PM2 and PM3 are reported on the same scale with the same level ranges. Because all three tests cover the whole year, the Florida Department of Education says a student is likely not to score at grade level in the fall and winter, and that this does not necessarily mean the student is off track.
Is a FAST scale score a percentage?
No. A scale score is not a percentage and not a count of correct answers. The percentile rank on the report is also different: it compares your child with other Florida students who took the same test.
Why did my child's score go up but the level stay the same?
The lowest score for each level rises with each grade. A Reading score of 213 is Level 4 in Grade 3, Level 3 in Grade 4 and Level 2 in Grade 5.
Where are the charts for Kindergarten to Grade 2, Writing and Science?
They are separate. Kindergarten to Grade 2 FAST uses a different scale. B.E.S.T. Writing, the Science assessment in grades 5 and 8, and the end-of-course exams such as Algebra 1 each have their own score scales.

The level tells you where your child stands. The skill groups tell you what to practice. Our free Grade 4 Math skills check has 18 practice questions and shows results by skill group, with no sign-up needed. The Grade 4 score guide walks through the whole report.
